可见,生命在于运动,人类有机体的进化在于运动 。古语曰:"流水不腐,户枢不蠹",人体各器官系统"动则兴,不动则退",体育锻炼能使个体的运动器官及辅助运动器官以及其它器官得到发展,这完全符合生物学中"用进废退"的原理 。人类历史上有些名人是长寿者,例如,生活在古希腊黄金时代的苏格拉底(公元前469~399年)他生活简朴,终生坚持锻炼,在当时人们平均寿命只有二十多岁的情况下,他竟然活到七十岁!苏格拉底的学生柏拉图(公元前427~347年),出身名门,受过良好的教育(包括体育),他是一位体育家,一生不知何谓疾?。?坚持体育锻炼,终年八十岁 。
在身体健康的基础上,寿命可以延长 。经研究发现,每天运动的老鼠比关着不动的同类老鼠,寿命长25% 。野兔平均可活15年,家兔只能活4-5年 。牧羊狗可活27年,家狗仅活13年 。大象在野外可活到200岁 , 从小捕获喂养的大象最多活不到100岁 。野生动物比饲养动物寿命长的原因,主要在于他们经常地保持着频繁运动的缘故 。邮局的职工,外勤人员的寿命比内勤坐办公室的人员寿命要长 。
